N° 03 · The guide

What settles it for a mini.

Read this if the filters did not answer it. Every figure comes from the fridges on this page.

How big

Every fridge here holds under 101 litres. 48 hold 50 litres or less, about 30 to 40 cans, for a desk, a bedside or a spare corner. 65 hold 51 to 70 litres, the size most people buy, about 80 cans. 19 hold 71 to 100 litres, over 100 cans in the biggest. Widths run 350 to 595mm. For more room, see the full bar fridge range.

Where it goes

131 of the 132 stand 850mm or less, so they fit under a typical benchtop. Most of these vent out the back: 126 ask for 100mm behind, so they suit a shelf, a corner or a bench recess with air behind it rather than a tight cabinet. For a fridge built into cabinetry, see the under bench fridges, which vent through the front.

Quiet enough for a bedroom

Most minis here run at 37 to 43dB on the maker's figures: a low hum, fine in a living area or office. For a bedroom, the 3 absorption models (the Dellcool DW100CD, DW60E and DW-SC25) have no compressor and make no running noise. The trade-off: the room must stay under 25°C for them to cool properly, and they are not for alfresco. Our guide to the quietest bar fridges compares them.

Glass or solid

70 have glass doors and 62 solid ones. Glass shows what is inside; a solid door keeps it private and uses less power. 7 have heated glass, which stays clear in humid air. 4 are small freezers rather than fridges, for ice and frozen goods; check the listing title.

Inside or alfresco

68 of the 132 are listed for indoor or covered alfresco use and 64 for indoor only. The tropical rated Schmick SC70 and SC88 models are built for warm outdoor areas; keep any fridge under cover and out of direct sun. More on the outdoor bar fridges page.

Branded fridges

59 of the minis here carry an officially licensed beer or drinks brand, from Great Northern and VB to Carlton and Corona: the same fridge, wrapped in the brand. See all the licensed branded fridges.

Running cost

On the maker's figures, a mini costs about $20 to $160 a year to run: the 10 star Schmick RND70 about $21, the SC70 Black about $65, the triple glazed SC70-SS about $150 and the 98 litre SC88 about $159. Heated and triple glazed glass costs more than a solid door.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a desk or bedside, 50 litres or less holds about 30 to 40 cans. A 70 litre mini, the size most people buy, holds about 80. The biggest here hold up to 100 litres. Measure the space first: widths run 350 to 595mm.

The absorption models, the Dellcool DW100CD, DW60E and DW-SC25, have no compressor and make no running noise. They need a room under 25°C. Of the compressor fridges, the Schmick SK40 is the quietest at 37dB.

Yes. Choose an absorption model for silence, or a compressor fridge at 37 to 41dB for more cooling. Leave the air gap behind it the listing asks for.

On the maker's figures, about $20 to $160 a year. The 10 star Schmick RND70 is about $21; triple glazed glass doors cost more.

Size. A mini fridge here holds under 101 litres; bar fridges go up to 400 litres or more over two or three doors. Both keep drinks cold; a mini fits where a full bar fridge will not.

68 of the 132 are listed for covered alfresco use. The tropical rated Schmick SC70 and SC88 are built for it. Keep it under cover and out of direct sun.

The smallest here is the 23 litre Schmick SC23C, made to keep milk beside a coffee machine. The smallest for drinks is the 31 litre Schmick SK40, 395mm wide and 550mm tall.

Build. The ones here are made to run every day: stainless or triple glazed doors, locks on many, tropical ratings for warm rooms and covered alfresco, or silent absorption cooling. Cheaper minis usually drop those.

From $297; the middle of the range is about $567. Each listing shows the current price and delivery to your postcode.
