304 or 316
59 of the 67 stainless fridges here are 304 stainless steel. 8 are 316 marine grade: the Rhino Envy range and the Blastcool iXP. 316 adds molybdenum, which resists the pitting that salt air causes, so it is the grade for a coastal home. Indoors or in an alfresco area inland, 304 does the job. For coastal models, see the outdoor fridges.
Heated glass or not
47 of the range have a glass door and 20 a solid one. 28 of the glass models have heated glass, which keeps the door clear of condensation when the air is warm and humid. Heating the glass costs power: the SK206-HD with heated glass is rated at about $349 a year, its solid-door twin at about $193.
One, two or three doors
42 have one door, 20 have two and 5 have three. Two-door heated glass is where most customers land: the SK206-HD, SK190-SS and SK246-HD are three of our four best-selling stainless fridges.
Width and fit
Widths run from 395mm to 1,350mm, and the middle of the range is 600mm. The slimmest under-bench models are 495mm. Every under-bench stainless fridge here needs 50mm clear behind and 10mm at the sides and top. Some freestanding uprights need more, up to 100mm behind and 30mm at the sides. Every listing gives the clearances for that model.
Inside or alfresco
Two of the stainless fridges here are for indoor use only. The rest are listed for indoor or alfresco use, and each listing shows the maker's rating. A stainless finish on its own does not make a fridge suitable for outdoors: the rating does.
Running cost
On the makers' figures, the middle of the stainless range costs $172 a year to run. The 70L HUS-SC70-SS is about $65 a year and the 132L under-bench SK126R-HD about $113; heated two-door models run to about $250 to $350.
