The outdoor rating decides it
The rating tells you where a fridge can live, and it matters more than any other spec on the listing. There are two ratings in this range. Under cover models are rated indoor or outdoor enclosed under cover: patios, pergolas and outdoor kitchens with a roof. Outdoor rated models are IP24 rated for outdoor use, so they can handle rain, but not direct sun. 316 marine-grade stainless is a build rather than a rating, and it matters by the coast.
An indoor-only fridge does not belong outside at any price, so there are none on this page.
Heat is the hard part
Getting drinks cold is easy. Keeping a compressor working in a hot, unairconditioned space through an Australian summer is not. The Rhino and Blastcool models here are specified to cool easily to zero in high ambient temperatures of 43°C and above. Makers rate each fridge to an ambient temperature, usually 38°C or 43°C, so check the rating on the listing against your summers. Whatever you choose, keep it out of direct sun.
304 or 316 stainless
Most of the range is 304 stainless, in steel or black, and that suits an alfresco area inland. Within reach of salt air, choose 316 marine-grade: it is the highest grade available for rust prevention and longevity in coastal areas.
Under bench or upright
An under-bench fridge vents through the front, so it can sit inside a run of cabinetry in an outdoor kitchen. An upright or freestanding fridge vents at the back and needs clear air behind and beside it. Put a rear-venting fridge in a closed cavity and it will run hot and fail early.
Size for the crowd, then for the space
Single-door models here hold 89 to 219 litres, two-door 190 to 274 and three-door 330 to 399. A single-door under-bench fridge is 470 to 600mm wide; two doors take 870 to 1200mm and three doors about 1350mm. Measure the cavity, not the room, and work from the ventilation clearance on the listing.
Glass, locks and noise
Heated glass keeps the door clear on humid nights so you can see what is inside. Every Schmick and Rhino fridge on this page locks. Most run at 43 dB, quiet enough for a deck beside the living room.
